Monster iCarCharger 1000 is very good : Monster iCarCharger 1000 for iPod and iPhone
I didn't buy this charger at Amazon, but rather at Radio Shack -- where I was returning the Griffin AutoPilot for iPod (more on that below) -- before reading any of the reviews on this site. If I had read them first, i definitely would not have gone near the Monster product.
However, now having installed the Monster iCarCharger Aux 1000 and used it in my car with my iPhone 3GS, I'm wondering what all the negative reviews were about. It's pretty darn good -- and I really like the cord management and the ability to change tracks easily.
Most of the complaints people have are about sound quality. My experience, however, was good. Yes, the sound output is amplified and there is no way to adjust it. I agree with those that suggest you should have the Equalizer turned off on your iPod. I started with Bass Boost on, and it was too much. Turning it off did the trick.
I also found that, for books on tape, the sound with the Monster was even crisper than just using my normal 3.5mm audio cable.
Another complaint was about the thinness of the 3.5mm cable that is included with the Monster. I have to admit -- I was surprised myself when I first saw it -- it IS thin. But sound quality is the ultimate measure and, as mentioned above, I am completely satisfied with that.
Another complaint was about the flex joint on the charger moving too easily. I have not experienced this -- the Monster has click stops and, at least in my charger slot, stays positioned where I put it.
Another complaint was that the plug into your iPhone does not fit well and falls out. Absolutely not true -- it fits into my iPhone snugly and stays there.
Finally, some folks complained about hum/electronic interference. I've always had a little bit of sporadic hum -- the Monster did not exacerbate it -- and maybe even improved it a bit. Hard to tell. I also tried the Gigaware (Radio Shack) branded charger/line out kit -- which has a built in noise reducer on the 3.5mm line out (but no track changer pad) -- and could not tell the difference in the noise level (although it did point out and contrast with the amplified effect of the Monster). If you don't want the track change feature, the Gigaware is cheaper and I can also recommend it.
Overall, 4 stars for the Monster iCarCharger because (i) there ought to be a volume control (even though I'm OK with the volume as set), (ii) I preferred that the older model had a coiled cord going between the charger and your iPhone (this model just has a cord, which you need to coil with a twist tie), and (iii) I wish it had a shuffle on/off button on the charger (instead of the advance playlist).
But those modest negatives shouldn't take away from the fact that this is one of the few choices out there that: a) charges your iPhone, b) allows you to play it through the aux input of your car, and c) allows you to change tracks through the pad on the charger itself.
By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I can confirm that the Griffin equivalent charger for the iPod (AutoPilot for iPod mentioned above) does NOT work well with the iPhone 3GS. One, it charges VERY slowly. Two, and more importantly, it randomly appears to initiate track changes. Of course, it doesn't purport to work with the iPhone -- only with the iPod -- so that was my mistake for not noticing that initially. I haven't tried the Kensington equivalent charger, but I was not enamored with the idea of the remote control being velcroed on to the steering wheel and requiring its own battery. By the way, even if your charger outlet is off to the side, the iMonster controls are very tactile, and you can find the track forward and reverse buttons easily by feel, without having to take your eyes off the road (that was another complaint folks had).
So, of all the solutions out there currently, I think the Monster iCarCharger Aux 1000 is the best choice, even if not perfect.
Edit 2/15/10: I'm lowering my rating by a star. Unfortunately, when my car goes over a bump the jarring seems (sometimes) to trigger the change track feature. And sometimes it changes even without a bump. Very annoying. Not sure I would buy this again -- I would go with the Gigaware from Radio Shack, even though it doesn't have the change track feature on the charger pad.
Edit 3/26/10: OK, ignore the edit immediately above (I'm leaving it in, however, so someone else doesn't make my mistake). In the iPod settings of my iPhone, I had "Shake to Shuffle" enabled. So, guess what? Every time I went over a big bump, the playlist shuffled. Not Monster's fault. So back to 4 stars.
